If You Leave

“Drifting apart like two sheets of ice, my love, frozen hearts growing colder with time” those are the heartbreaking lyrics that open the stunning debut album ‘If You Leave’ from Daughter. With an opener like that you know you are not going to be listening to an album that is full of joy and happiness and the tone is set for an album that is full to the brim with darkness and heartbreak. Now call me sadistic if you like but, when it comes to an album, those are two qualities that I always admire.

‘If You Leave’ is an album that can be devoured as an entire piece of work. From opener ‘Winter’ to closing song 'Shallows’ every song blends effortlessly into each other with the echoing sound of a heart being ripped out and torn to shreds, none more so than in ‘Youth’ as Elena sings “I’ve lost it all, I’m just a silhouette, I’m a lifeless face that you’ll soon forget”. If that line does not bring a tear to your eye then you must have a heart made of stone. Throughout the album the sparse, haunting sounds combined with the sad vocals will take over your entire body, soul and mind and, in so doing, ensures that ‘If You Leave’ is an album that I guarantee you will always remember.

Living in an age where music is so easily accessible and dipping in and out of music has become a norm for so many of us, I can’t help but get excited when an album arrives that you just want to listen to from start to finish over and over again. That is exactly what Daughter has given to the world with ‘If You Leave’ and we should all be incredibly grateful for such a beautiful gift to wrap our ears around.
