Fuck Buttons
Slow Focus

Released: 22nd July 2013
Label: ATP Recordings

Finally a new Fuck Buttons album! It's been the best part of a four year wait since the fantastic Tarot Sport, an album which pegged them rightly as some of the finest purveyors of noisy electronica. The album was so euphoric that Danny Boyle felt compelled to use it for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games and fittingly so as it was like riding on a joyous wave, which was a stark departure from their debut Street Horrrsing which was a harrowing (but riveting) slab of drone noise that would sound much better soundtracking a horror film much less a sporting event.

So where next? With the additional exposure from said games it would have been reasonable to expect the sound to become more polished and mainstream. Instead they seem to have found the perfect middle ground between the first two albums taking the euphoria but some how twisting it and making it darker. Opening track 'Brainfreeze' starts with drums pounding out tribal rhythms before crunching electronics come sweeping in. 'The red wing' somehow succeeds in being the least danceable track I've ever wanted to actually dance to and the closeting 20 minute duo of 'Stalker' and 'Hidden XS' show they haven't lost their knack for sky scraping anthems.

It's a year of triumphant returns for electronic music but as far as I'm concerned you can keep your Daft Punks and your Boards of Canada as this album is as close to perfect as you will get.
