Cerulean Salt

Released: 1st July 2013
Label: Wichita Recordings

Cerulean Salt is the second album from Waxahatchee, the performing name for American singer-songwriter Katie Crutchfield. 'American Weekend' her debut album as Waxahatchee released in 2012 was an acoustic led album, this sublime follow up ‘Cerulean Salt’ see Katie swap the acoustic for the electric. Not quite as dramatic as when Dylan went electric, however this is a progression you need to hear.

Cerulean Salt is an album of raw, personal songs played with belief and passion. Just looking at the title to the opening song ‘Hollow Bedroom’ instantly sets the scene for an album that is going to be full of loneliness and heartbreak. The punchy electric guitar and tender voice of Katie’s on the opening track will instantly grab you and hold you captive. ‘Dixie Cups and Jars’ follows with a very hypnotic melody leaving no doubt that this is an album that you can’t afford to let pass you by. ‘Lips and Limbs’ has a youthful sound and Katie’s vocals throughout ‘Blue Pt. II’ become firmly fixed inside your soul, the vocals throughout this song are gentle, soothing and incredibly compelling.

The album proceeds with one fascinating song after another. ‘Coast to Coast’ is the stand out pop song on the album that will be sure to get the radio stations to take notice. ‘Lively’ is a dark yet beautiful song which mixes heartbreak and substance abuse as Katie sings “We sit in the dark, Needles and tubes in your arm”. The drums, guitar and vocals throughout ‘Waiting’ all combine in a very memorable manner. ‘Swan Dive’ comes across as a lovely sweet song until you stop and listen to the lyrics and hear Katie sing “You’re much better off without me”, ‘You’re Damaged’ sees Katie returning to the acoustic guitar to end this great album.

‘Cerulean Salt’ stands out as a very enchanting album that could well turn out to be one of the breakthrough albums of the year.
