Dry the River
Shallow Bed

Released: 2nd March 2012
Label: Sony Music

At the start of the year Dry The River were being listed on many a critics list (including our very own) as ‘ones to watch in 2012’. Now with the release of their debut album ‘Shallow Bed’ it’s time to find out if the band are able to realise the potential that was evident during their 2011 live sets, including that mesmerizing performance at Green Man.

‘Shallow Bed’ is an album full of soaring songs that are destined for arenas across the world. The band combine folk and big indie sing-a-long anthems with aplomb. ‘New Ceremony’ is the epitome of this. ‘Shield Your Eyes’ continues in the same format, soft, shimmering, sweet verse and a soaring chorus that will ring around your head for days to come.

Other highlights include ‘History Book’ a song of two halves with the opening haunting vocals reminiscing of Anthony Hegarty. The second half contains a beautiful noise of guitars, drums and trumpets. ‘Bible Belt’ is a beautiful acoustic led track with fragile vocals and lyrics that take on the subject of alcoholic parents “Lo and behold your mother is drinking again, this might be the coldest winter since records begun”. ‘Demons’ is a haunting track complete with orchestra and strings leaving you weak all over.

‘Shallow Bed’ has without doubt proved that Dry The River are worthy of the attention they have been receiving. This album will see the band gaining more and more plaudits and fans across the country and is sure to be a contender for the Mercury Prize come the autumn.
