The Plot Against Common Sense

Some things in life are just fact, the sky is blue, water’s wet and Andrew Falkous is one of the greatest lyricists ever. There aren’t many people who can pull off wry wit in a song without it seeming in some ways cheesy and trite, this is where Falco’s skill lies, able to lampoon the movie industry, the olympics and general social commentary with aplomb. Who else could get away with lyrics like “I got a bad back/from a slow coach/and a sore head/from skol“ (sorry dad I was late for the riots) or “Pirates of the Caribbean 47/Johnny Depp stars as a robot pirate/Who loses his wife in a game of poker/And tries to win her back with hilarious consequences” (Robocop 4: Fuck off Robocop).
But that’s not to say that it’s a one man show. Since the last album FOTL have shed a member in Kelson Mathias but have bolstered the pack with ex-Million Dead bassist Julia Ruzicka and Strange News From Another Star guitarist Jimmy Watkins, helping give a bulkier sound and backing up the keyboard jabs with blasts of guitar noise, and Jack Egglestons pounding rhythms.
The sheer force of the albums delivery is sure to leave you floored, and that’s what raises FOTL far above any of their contemporaries.
