Johnny Marr
The Messenger

Released: 25th February 2013
Label: Warner Bros

Anyone who has picked up a guitar in the last thirty years and been part of an indie guitar band has, whether they know it or not, been influenced by Johnny Marr. Noel Gallagher once said that seeing The Smiths perform ‘This Charming Man’ on Top of The Pops in 1983 made him want to be him and how many times have we read about a band featuring a “Johnny Marr-esque guitar riff”?

Through his work with Electronic, Modest Mouse and The Cribs (to name a few), he has continued to create music of the highest standard and deserves to be talked about as one of the greatest guitarists ever to emerge from the UK.

Having spent years of being side of stage, Johnny has finally decided that the time is right for him to take centre stage and release his debut solo album.

‘The Messenger’ has a number of different themes running through the it, showing how Johnny has moved with the times and been influenced by so many genres of music.

Opening song ‘The Right Thing Right’ has a rich soulful sound, whilst ‘I Want The Heartbeat’ is a fast paced, passionate song that will causes your heart to start pounding. ‘European Me’ contains uplifting melodies and harmonies that will be sure to charm many and, as for ‘Upstarts’, well what can I say, does guitar pop get any better than this? ‘Lockdown’ has anthemic guitar riffs just waiting to be unleashed in the live arena.

Within four tracks you will be left wondering why he left it so long before taking centre stage.

‘The Messenger’ is an album that will already be owned and loved by anyone whose life has already been influenced by this man and is an album that can be picked up by a teenager who will no doubt be inspired to pick up a guitar.
