Catfish and the Bottlemen

Interview

Catfish and The Bottlemen are a four piece from Llandundo who formed in 2009.

Since forming they have self released EP’s, live demos and singles; all of which are available on their Bandcamp page. I seriously recommend you spend time listening to them. These are songs that will inspire you to do something positive with you life. Like with so many great bands in the past, these are songs that make you believe that anything is possible.

Catfish and The Bottlemen are without a doubt heading for major success in the music world and will one day be playing the big arenas and festival stages. It’s going to be one hell of an exciting ride, just make sure you are there with them every step of the way.

Check out the video for Sidewinder below.

We caught up with the boys to chat about all things Catfish and music in general.

Let’s get the formalities out of the way first. Who’s in the band and what are their roles?

There’s …
Van - Vocals, Billy - Bass, Ben – Guitar, Dr. Bob - Drums

How did you come together as a band?

Me, Billy and Ben have known each other since we where little cause they used to rough me up and that in school when we where growing up. We met Bob through Billy. Its kind of a weird story but Billy used to go out with Bob’s Mum longggggg before we knew Bob. Anyway he ended up finding out that little old Dr. was quite the wiz behind a kit so we ended up drafting him in and he turned out to be the best thing we've ever done.

Was there a defining moment in your life when you thought “that’s it, I’m gonna be a rock star!”

Hahahaha! We're not really there yet so I’ve not had a moment like that yet, but I think Billy had that moment when he was about 7, he thinks he's Elvis but he's a spit of Elton John.

What has been the creative driving force behind the band?

In terms of songs and stuff I write hellaciously, I’m always trying to make something happen when we rehearse and stuff, just keep ahead of ourselves you know? So that when it comes to us making an album we'll have like 3.8million songs??? So on that front I guess just keeping on top of things. Billy’s quite creative in the kitchen mind.

What has been the highlight of the bands career so far?

I don't know about the other lads but for me it wasn't anything that astounding or anything. We've played this one venue in Chester ever since we first started, Telford’s Warehouse, they kind of believed in us from the start and watched us grow into who we are. Anyway, our most recent show there was hammered! They had to lock the doors from 9 o'clock cause it was so packed!!! It just felt so good to me because when we started we'd be playing to literally no-one and to see it full like that just give me a bit of a kiss on the chops you know? Haha.

What are your views on the current music scene and how does it vary (if at all) from city to city?

If I’m honest there’s been nothing new to come out, like PROPERLY OUT that has done anything for me, little songs here and there but not a new band or an album or anything. But I don't really keep tabs on it all too much, I just concentrate on us getting where we want to be and keep my head down really. So in our little R&B world IT’S AMAZING! We love that scene!

What are you listening to at the moment? Anyone we should keep an eye on?

My manager has got me really into Eels at the moment. He keeps sticking them on during our massive drives and I love them me!!! There's a quality little new band from Morecambe called The Heartbreaks who I’m really into. I kinda think we're like maybe a punkier version of them. Hopefully meet them soon and take over the world together, haha.

Vinyl, CD or MP3?

Vinyl man!!! Allllllll Bloooody Dayyyy

If I was your 14yr old nephew (bare with me), which one album would you send me home with to begin my musical journey?

I’d send you home with one song, ‘Listen to the Lion’ by Van Morrison and then I’d tell you to never listen to anything else again because you wouldn't need it. Then I’d kiss you on the forehead and tell you to stay away from whores, they'll break your heart.

What does the future hold for Catfish and the Bottlemen, both short term and long term?

Short term, we've got a new single out April 23rd called Brokenarmy, which is a lovely little number straight from the depths of hell and we're just going to explode all over the rest of this tour.
Long term we're going to just keep steam rolling and meeting new people and touring wherever will have us. Just keep on keeping on I guess until someone’s ready to throw a million dollar bills at our welsh asses and make us HUGE!!!!! Haha!

Cheers for talking to us and good luck with everything.
