Mute Records

Independant Record Label

Mute Records began life in 1978 when Daniel Miller recorded music under the name ‘The Normal’ and distributed it through Rough Trade shops under the name Mute Records.

The last thirty four years has seen Mute release records from Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Moby and Richard Hawley to name but a few.

Mute has always supported eclectic and experimental artists, trying to ensure that these artists gets the exposure that their music deserves.

You only have to look at some of the artists currently on the labels roster to see how thirty four years after forming the label still firmly believes in supporting artists and ensuring that artists obtain the best possible way of getting their music to as many people as possible.

Some of the more recent additions to Mute’s family include:

Big Deal
A boy girl duo consisting of Kacey Underwood and Alice Costelloe who combine guitars and fragile vocals in such a perfect and intimate way. Lights Out was one of the finest debut albums of 2011.

Josh T. Pearson
Texas singer songwriter who won the acclaimed Rough Trade album of the year last year for ‘Last Of The Country Gentlemen'. A beautiful and honest album from an artist who never disappoints.

Beth Jeans Houghton
A unique and wonderful talent from Newcastle Upon Tyne, who creates beautiful folk music, combining wonderful sounds with such a sweet and angelic voice.

Mute Records is and always will be a record label that the world of music needs. This is a label that is clearly run by people who are passionate about music and care about the music that the world gets to hear.
