Witchita Recordings

Independant Record Label

Wichita Recordings is one of the finest labels the UK has ever produced. This isn't opinion this is a stone cold fact! Don't believe me? Check out their roster; they boast some of the best bands releasing records today and there back catalogue is equally as impressive.

Wichita started life in 2000, named after the classic track Wichita Lineman originally written by Jimmy Webb back in 1968, by founding members Mark Bowen and Dick Green. Both of whom worked with Alan McGee at Creation Records.

Their starting point was licensing American artists for British release. First came Bright Eyes - Fevers and Mirrors in 2000, followed by other American acts like Yeah Yeah Yeahs and My Morning Jacket. But it wasn't until they released Bloc Party's debut album in 2003 that they had a chance at a secure future.

With an ‘its all about the music’ ethic, the label has released an incredibly diverse collection of records, ranging from The Bronx, Those Dancing days, through to Euro Childs. Therefore shedding the ‘label sound’ associated with many others.

Five essential Wichita records:

Bright eyes - Fevers and Mirrors

Bright eyes third album, was a beautifully crafted lo-fi indie gem which perfectly showcased the increasing song writing abilities of Conor Orberst.

  The Bronx - The Bronx

The debut album from LA's The Bronx was a real kick up the arse for hardcore punk when it came out in 2003.

The Cribs - Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever

The cribs already had 2 fantastic albums under their belt but with this Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand) produced offering it caught them at their Punk/Pop best.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Originally self released it was only Wichita that stepped up to the plate to release this squiff indie pop gem, they still don't have an official American record label.

Los Campesinos! - Hold On Now Youngster

Their debut released in 2008 was the perfect combination of frantic energy and pop charm which they have subsequently gone on to hone into a fine craft.

So far this year Wichita have already released two great records. Both of which this very website has been raving about. First Aid Kit's - The Lions Roar and Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory. Add to those the impending release of the new Cribs album in May, and it’s looking like another golden year for Wichita.
