The Lucid Dream

Venue: The Moon Club, Cardiff
Date: 30th September 2016

Having been somewhat obsessed by Compulsion Songs, the latest album from The Lucid Dream, seeing them live for the first time was something I was eagerly anticipating, and the fact it was on a Friday night at The Moon Club only managed to accelerate that excitement. Of course when you are that excited there is always a risk of being let down, but I can safely say that was not the case and, if anything, all my expectations were blown away as the sound completely filled the Moon Club and had me fixated for the entirety of the set.

Watching The Lucid Dream on stage it is clear that they are four lads whose main purpose in life is to stand on stage and play music they clearly love and believe in. They let the music do the talking and blew us away with one great song after another. ‘Bad Texan’ sounded biblical, as did every song in tonight’s set list, it really was a wall of sound filling The Moon Club, bouncing off every wall, corner and the ceiling it felt like we were in the middle of a tidal wave of inspiring noise. If, when you listen to Compulsion Songs, you wonder how these songs would sound live, I can assure you they sound even better than you could possibly imagine.

The band interacted with the audience with Mark telling us anecdotes about the time he came to Ninian Park in Cardiff back in the 90s with Carlisle United. Their humour was evident when, only half way through the set, we were introduced to their final three songs, but there was no need to worry as they were all long songs that kept us entertained for another twenty minutes or more.

The only negative about the evening was the lack of people in The Moon Club, Cardiff where were you? You really did miss a treat. Those that were there certainly shared my enthusiasm and excitement, it was one of those shows you will not forget, and one that should have been a sell out.
