Damn Vandals

Venue: Underbelly, London
Date: 1st March 2012

Damn Vandals are a much talked about band who have been hatching quite a stir in media circles and A&R gurus alike in London recently with the razzmatazz surrounding their EP release ‘The Beautiful Mind’ on February 27th. Shaun Keavney from BBC 6 Music who is not the easiest of men to please has heaped heavy praise upon them after hearing the first track from the EP ‘Beautiful Mind’ hence AMP Magazine were looking forward to this show.

The band comprise of Jack Kansas, vocals/guitar, Frank Pick, guitar, Adam Kilmore Gardens, bass and Chris Christianson III is responsible for the drumming. Kansas fronts the band all in white like a less narcissistic Johnny Borrell. Their sound is predominantly a full one, guitar driven with Kilmore Gardens’ punchy, terse bass heavy in the mix. It’s rock and roll for sure but rock and roll with an extra urgency and a pressure that doesn’t ask you to listen, it tells you to. An English Queens of The Stone Age perhaps or a Libertines with less pomp and more substance. Pulsating songs such as ‘Trouble With Jesus’ and ‘As Seen On TV’ glimmer on the night but the stand out song for me without doubt is the awesome ‘Beautiful Mind’ that concludes the set. It is driven along with bass and drums and Kansas’ vocals that could easily belong to Jack White which beg the question “how does it feel in your beautiful mind?”

An interesting band, a dynamic energised band with a power that is a rare one. I’ve already found myself on their website looking to find when their next show is. Go see!
