Venue: Moon Club, Cardiff
Date: 25th April 2012

The Moon Club is one of Cardiff’s newer venues (by name at least). It’s renowned throughout the city’s thriving music scene for its alternative clientele, its jukebox championing local artists and of course its fine selection of hard liquor. But more than anything is renowned for its warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Quite a contrast then to the evil weather that was battering the city and doing its upmost to ruin highly regarded local band Hullabaloo’s chances of filling the place and successfully launching their Landslide EP. These were genuine concerns as I chatted with Benji beforehand. He needn’t have worried.

Newport based Beijing Bandits opened the night and within minutes any concerns over damp clothing or ruined hairdos were forgotten. Their energetic set of self labeled ‘gypsy ska rock’ had the place transfixed.

Next up was Sleepy Panda Club, a six piece outfit whose driving, melodic post punk sound has previously been championed by the likes of Bethan Elvyn and Jen Long. They easily live up to these endorsements and brought an already excited crowd to almost fever pitch.

By the time Hullabaloo took the stage the crowd had swelled significantly and there was an sense of excitement and anticipation in the air. It’s easy to see why, the band are an extremely likeable bunch. Throughout the set there was plenty of crowd interaction that each and every person watching was more than happy to get involved with.

That said, you still need to have the songs to back it up, and Hullabaloo have them. Plenty of them. They open, fittingly, with Landslide and embark on a forty minute set of extremely tight and polished indie pop. Each track from the EP, as you’d expect, is represented, plus a cheeky Lady Madonna cover thrown in for good measure. The musicianship is fantastic throughout and the crowd engagement is second to none.

Keep your eyes peeled for future dates because they’re bloody good fun.
