Venue: Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff
Date: 17th May 2012

Japandroids return to Cardiff for the first time since their supporting slot for A Place to Bury Strangers, and tonight they are here to blow us all away with their first headline appearance in the city.

Its an early show tonight with a curfew of 10pm which means by the time I arrive support act Cadence Weapon are well into their set, bringing their brand of Canadian hip-hop to the evening. It’s slick and well produced and may seem like a buzzer combination for the garage rock onslaught thats about to be unleashed but there is no doubt that they've won some new fans this evening.

Next up Japandroids who promise to blaze through their set so they can fit as many song in before the early close, and they do just that. Cutting back and forth between new and old tracks so there’s enough to keep everyone happy, and also settting the stage nicely for the next record to be a truly great piece of work. The set comes to a close with a fantastic cover of Big Black’s ‘Racer X’ and the lead track from their 2008 EP ‘Darkness on the Edge of Gastown’.

It truly is quite a feat that two guys can cause such a racket. It’s the opening night of the tour and if they put that much energy into every performance it would be hard to see them making it out of it alive.

Despite having been pummelled by garage rock for well over an hour I could easily have held on for more; their next return to Cardiff can’t come soon enough!
